On January 26, the True North Certified Forest Products Network announced that the Network has added six new member firms to its FSC Chain-of-Custody group certification program. These firms manufacturer an array of products from wood originating in well-managed FSC certified forests or from reclaimed/recycled sources.

"As increasing numbers of architects, builders, remodelers and homeowners are looking to build sustainably and applying for LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) certification," states Tony Elvig of Old Globe Reclaimed Wood Company. "The True North Network's group certification program offered us the opportunity to achieve FSC certification in timely and cost-effective manner."

The FSC certification allows the six companies to sell FSC-certified and labeled products ranging from lumber and timbers, to flooring and paneling, to cabinetry and closet systems, to shingles and SIPs.

On June 18, the True North Certified Forest Products Network announced that the Network and its twelve member firms had received FSC Chain-of-Custody certification for an array of products manufactured from wood originating in well-managed FSC certified forests or from reclaimed/recycled sources.

“As increasing numbers of architects, builders, remodelers and homeowners are looking to build green and applying for LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) and MN GreenStar certification,” states Jeff Forsythe of Nordecor in Brainerd, “I felt that it was time to prepare our company to serve this growing market segment through FSC certification. The True North Network offered us the opportunity to achieve FSC certification in a quick and very resourceful manner. It was also timely in that we are now one of the few companies of our type that has been awarded the new FSC Recycle certification, thus allowing us to certify the authenticity of our reclaimed barn-wood line.”

The FSC certification allows the twelve companies to sell FSC-certified and labeled products ranging from lumber and timbers to flooring and paneling, to cabinetry and custom furniture, to architectural millwork and staircase components, to fireplace mantels and art doors, to log siding and decking.

Annual Meeting & New Board of Directors. The annual meeting was held on August 6, and the new board of directors and officers were elected for the coming year. They are:

Goods from the Woods Vendors. Vendor sign up for the GFTW Up-North Marketplace is underway. This is the fifth year for the event.

North Woods Workshop Series. The focus of this year’s workshops will be “Bottom-Line Marketing & Sales: marketing and selling your products and sustainability messages”. The line-up of seven workshops will be held in
Virginia, Grand Rapids, Bemidji, and Brainerd. Please see the enclosed workshop sheet and registration form.

2008 Campaign Marketing Plan. During September and October, the Campaign’s board of directors will be assessing the 2007 marketing activities and developing the marketing plan for the coming year. The Minnesota Wood Campaign (MWC) is a joint marketing and branding venture for True North Woods® branded products produced from materials sustainably harvested from the world-class forests of northern Minnesota USA.

Our Organization. Owned and supported by 150 wood and forest producers from northern Minnesota who harvest or gather wood and forest materials from local wood lots and produce a value-added wood or forest product for the market. Members range from large manufacturers, to multi-generation family-owned enterprises, to small workshops, to the studios of nationally recognized craftsmen and artisans. Founded in 2003.

Our Forest. Located in the central-north region of the USA, centered about 150 miles north of Minneapolis, stretching westward from the shores of Lake Superior. Our three major forest types – boreal, central pines, and hardwoods – provide an opportunity to source a wide range of wood species in one location, an opportunity unique to northern Minnesota. Our extremely cold weather produces close-grained and clear woods, perfect for some of the most beautiful products produced today.
